Makeup Cotton Swab Alternatives

There’s nothing more refreshing then taking off your bra and washing off your makeup after a long day. But lets be real. Those cotton swabs are expensive and the cost can add up. Not only that some of those swabs have harmful chemicals in them and they can create a ton of waste. So here are some options to consider when looking for an alternative. Remember, small changes make a big impact. Just using one of these alternatives every once in awhile can make a huge impact on waste production.

  1. Flannel Squares

These are super easy to make. All you do is take an old flannel shirt and wash it with a sensitive soap. You want to use a sensitive soap because the material is going on your face. Using a baby detergent or soap nuts works best. Next, just cut the flannel into about 4 inch squares. And bam! You’ve got a soft material to wash your make-up off with.

2. Microfiber Face Towel

Microfiber face towels take off makeup great. And they are pretty cheap. You can buy about 7 of them for around $13 and they can be found at most retailers.

3. Bamboo Makeup Remover Pads

These are great for your face and really work. However, I am not a fan of the polyester ones. The fibers shed on your face and they don’t take the makeup off well. You can buy the cotton Bamboo remover pads on Etsy and on Amazon for about $10 for around 5 pads.

4. Sea Sponge

Sea_sponge1Ok, I have never use this but I’ve heard about it through the grape vine. These are supposedly good for oily skin. They cleanse your pores, stimulate blood circulation, and help your color tone. You can buy a sea sponge on Amazon for about $20. Find out more about how sea sponges are good for your skin here. So how are these organisms cultivated? Well, it’s important to buy sponges from a company that sustainably harvested them. Sea sponges are living organisms and if cultivated wrong they can die. Some companies cultivate their sea sponges sustainabily and when cultivated correctly the cutting of the sponge can actually help the sponge thrive and better its health. Find out more here.
