Summer Fun- Week 1

This week we’ll be doing something super fun….drum roll please…..nature hike! That’s right! So grab that bug spray and those hiking sandals. Hiking is often free and is a great source of exercise for you and the family. Let’s talk about a family trip to your local park.

  1. Find Your Park

You can find a list of national parks here. You can find a list of state parks here.                  There are many other local parks not listed that may be a great resource and often            are free.

2. Pick Your Day

You’ll need to pick your day so that you can check the weather. If you have young              kids I recommend going on a cool day and a shorter hike. Small kids get exhausted           easily so it’s best to limit the factors that may cause a melt down. Am I right? 😛

3. Pack Lots of Water

You and your littles will need water to stay hydrated. So pack enough of you and                 your little tikes.

4. Snack/Lunch

Hiking takes a lot of energy and your kids may need a boost of energy. So pack those          granola bars and fruit to avoid a melt down. It also may be a good idea to pack a                lunch. This will save you money and having a picnic at the park will be added fun.              Check out the sandwich recipe below.

5. Bug Spray and Sunscreen

There are many bug spray and sunscreen options. Pack your favorites and don’t                  forget to reapply every 30 minutes to an hour depending on your spray and lotion.

6. Rain Gear

It’s a great idea to keep umbrellas in your pack. Even a predicted sunny day can                  during into rain so keeping this will help you and the kids stay dry.

Games While Hiking

Spy- Playing Eye Spy will get your kids looking at nature and distracted from heat and exhaustion. All you do is say….”I spy with my little eyes something that is..(insert something commonly seen during your hiking trip..” Have your kids ask questions to find out what you’re looking at.

Bingo Card- Make a bingo card filled with different things found in nature like a bird, a tree, a bug, etc. Give them a crayon and if they fill their card they get a prize.

Recipe: Apple Crunch Turkey Sandwich

Ingredients

1 Apple Cut into Thin Slices

2 Crisp Large Pieces of Lettuce

1 Tablespoon Honey Mustard

1 Slice of Swiss Cheese or cheese of Choice

1 Slice of Tomato

2 Pieces of Whole Grain Bread or Carb of your Choice

1 Tbsp Dried Cranberries

1 Thick Slice of Honey Smoked Turkey (Can replace with cashew creme or hummus for a vegan or vegetarian option)

Makes 1 Sandwich and 10 Minutes to Make

Directions

Put honey mustard on both slices of bread. Place turkey, apple slices, lettuce, cheese, tomato, and cranberries on bread. Slice the sandwich in half and enjoy.
